Restoring trust in nutrition science through community building.
Amy Chow started BC Dietitians for one simple reason: to fix what’s broken in how people find trustworthy nutrition advice.
After 15 years as a Registered Dietitian, including her time at 8-1-1 HealthLink BC, Amy became frustrated by how confusing nutrition care can be for the public. In British Columbia, dietitians are the only regulated nutrition professionals, yet many people still don’t know who to turn to for personalized, evidence-based advice. The term “nutritionist” isn’t regulated in BC, meaning anyone can use the title, which makes it hard for people and businesses to know who is truly qualified.
Meanwhile, social media became flooded with influencers and self-proclaimed “nutritionists” promoting fad diets, supplements, and oversimplified advice.
Dietitians, on the other hand, worked in isolation—struggling to keep up with client load, maintaining their continued education, running their own marketing and practices, competing to combat the misinformation plagued the public.
In 2020, Amy made a bold move and built a network hub for dietitians. Through BC Dietitians, she has united a traditionally competitive field by creating shared opportunities that benefit the whole profession : dietitians gain access to clients who are looking, work together on collaborative projects, businesses find verified nutrition experts, wellness brands connect with credible voices, and the public finally gets trustworthy nutrition guidance.
