Our sports dietitians

✔️ Have finished at least a 5-year bachelor’s or master’s degree in dietetics and nutrition

✔️ Undergo supervised practical training in various setting including hospital, universities, clinics, sports team, government agencies (a practicum of 9-12 months’ full time work)

✔️ Are required by law to register with a provincial regulatory body—in BC, that’s the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC)

✔️ Participate in continuing education and professional development mandated by the college

✔️ Blend ongoing professional training, clinical experience, and scientific evidence to create tailored food and nutrition plans

Nutritionists or Personal Trainers

In BC, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist or personal trainer, regardless of their education level.

May have only completed a short online course (even as little as 1 hour), while others may have no formal training at all.

Advice may be based on personal experience rather than evidence-based sports nutrition training.

May not be trained to support athletes with injuries, medical conditions, or complex nutrition needs.

Are unregulated—most are independent business owners and are not obligated by law to keep up with professional development, or subject to health standards by a regulatory body

Frequently asked questions

We support a wide range of athletes and active individuals across BC and Ontario, including:

  • Endurance athletes: runners, cyclists, triathletes, ultrarunners, cross country/nordic skiers, and adventure racers
  • Climbers, mountain bikers, swimmers, dancers, gymnasts, and team-sport athletes (rugby, soccer, hockey, etc.)

Private practice sports dietitians are not covered by MSP.  However, many extended health benefit plans and insurance providers will cover a portion or all of the services provided by a Registered Dietitian (RD).

Please confirm with your plan provider your maximum yearly and visit allowance.

Furthermore, registered dietitians are authorized medical practitioners recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency.

If you pay out of pocket for your dietitian services, you can claim these expenses as medical expense for tax credit purposes.

A doctor’s referral is not necessary to book in with our dietitians. While a referral is not needed to start your journey with us, we do appreciate connecting with your healthcare provider to coordinate care and provide a holistic and comprehensive care plan.

Initial consultations are $200 for 70 minutes, and follow-up sessions are $145 for 40 minutes. Discounted packages are encouraged and available for multiple sessions.

Performance packages are like a training block.  Nutrition works best when you have follow ups to allow us to plan, test, adjust, and build confidence over time.

Dietitian services are tax-exempt. Many extended health plans cover registered dietitian services.

Definitely! Almost any athlete can benefit from consulting with a sports dietitian, particularly if you have specific dietary needs or medical conditions.

A sports dietitian can help you fuel training, improve energy and recovery, prevent issues like iron deficiency or RED-S, and create a personalized nutrition plan that supports both performance and overall health – so you can stress less about food and thrive more in sport.

Dietitians are skilled in creating personalized nutrition plans that cater to your unique situation and can help you reach your goals, offering great value for your investment.

You can consult a dietitian anytime you have a nutrition question, need a clear plan of action and/or want professional accountability to achieve your nutrition goals.

Most training seasons can span 12-20 weeks to allow time for testing different eating strategies and helping your body adapt.

So start thinking of nutrition as part of your training plan, not separate from it:

  • Practice fueling and hydration during long workouts
  • Support recovery with balanced meals and snacks
  • Adjust intake based on your training volume and intensity

Your nutrition plan isn’t something you can finalize in the final taper week, so don’t wait until a month before your race to figure it all out.
