Renal dietitians are the specialist on the impact of food on chronic kidney disease (CKD).  Renal dietitians typically have clinical experience working in hospitals, dialysis centers, or clinics that treat patients with kidney disease. 

These RDs will also partake in continuing education to stay current with the latest research, treatment guidelines, and best practices in renal nutrition.

A renal dietitian can help you with the following : 

  1. prevent chronic kidney disease progression
  2. avoid or treating hyper- and hypokalemia (too much or too little potassium in your blood)
  3. avoid or treat hyper- and hypophosphatemia (too much or too little phosphorus in your blood)
  4. determine appropriate fluid intake (avoid both dehydration and fluid overload)
  5. achieve and maintain a healthy weight
  6. prevent nutrition deficiencies
  7. avoid unnecessary restrictions

Private practice dietitians are not covered by MSP.  However, many extended health benefit plans and insurance providers will cover a portion or all of the services provided by a Registered Dietitian (RD). Please confirm with your plan provider your maximum yearly and visit allowance.

Registered dietitians are authorized medical practitioners recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency.  

If you pay out of pocket for your dietitian services, you can claim these expenses as medical expense for tax credit purposes.

A doctor’s referral is not necessary to book in with a BC Dietitian. While a referral is not needed to start your journey with us, we do appreciate connecting with your healthcare provider to coordinate care and provide a holistic and comprehensive care plan.
