Fall Nutrition 101

Welcome the season with food that feels (and tastes) good!

As the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, meals naturally start to feel a little more comforting. Fall invites us to slow down, gather around the table, and enjoy food that is warm, colorful, and satisfying. Personally, I am looking forward to a lot of gathering this cozy season – with some fresh game stews and squash (what are your cozy, comforting foods this year?)

Nourishing yourself this season does not require a perfect plan. A few familiar ingredients—such as squash, apples, leafy greens, beans, and whole grains—can make everyday meals feel both cozy and balanced. In this guide, you will find simple ideas for shopping, cooking, hydrating, and eating well during busy fall weeks.

A gentle place to begin:
Choose one seasonal ingredient you enjoy, then look for easy ways to add it to a meal you already make. Small, repeatable choices can make fall eating feel practical rather than complicated.

1)Seasonal produce to enjoy in fall

Fall produce brings plenty of color, texture, and natural variety to the kitchen. Think of your shopping list as an invitation to explore, not a set of rules.

  • Keep it simple — Buy one or two produce items you know you will use this week. I love cabbage – it keeps for a long time in the fridge and can be quite versatile
  • Use the freezer — Frozen fruits and vegetables can be helpful when fresh options are limited or time is short. I often get asked if they provide the same nutrition as fresh produce and the answer is YES!
  • Build around color — Add a bright apple, deep green leaves, or golden squash to make a familiar meal more inviting.

2) Build balanced comfort meals

Comfort food can also be everyday nourishment. Instead of changing everything at once, build meals from a few satisfying pieces that work well together.

Start with a base such as brown rice, oats, barley, or another whole grain. Add a source of protein like beans, lentils, eggs, tofu, nuts, or seeds, then include vegetables for color and texture. A little olive oil, cheese (but be careful with the cheese …. the dogs always cheese tax us when the cheese comes out … if you know, you know), sauce, or seasoning can bring the meal together in a way that feels enjoyable.

  • Choose a warm base — such as oats, brown rice, barley, or a baked potato.
  • Add a hearty ingredient —  beans, lentils, eggs, nuts, or seeds.
  • Include vegetables —  roasted squash, leafy greens, carrots, or peppers.
  • Finish with flavor — herbs, spices, citrus, a drizzle of dressing, or a favorite topping.
Comfort meal idea:
Try a bowl of whole grains topped with roasted squash, beans, leafy greens, and seeds. Or make a simple soup with beans, vegetables, and grains, then serve it with toast or fruit.

3) Support hydration and everyday wellbeing as the weather cools.

Cooler weather can make it easier to forget about drinks, especially when you are moving between work, errands, and home. Keep hydration visible and appealing by placing a water bottle where you spend time and taking a few sips whenever you change activities.

Warm drinks can be part of the rhythm too. Try water with lemon, herbal tea, or a mug of warm milk if you enjoy it. Soups, stews, and fruit can also add variety to meals and make staying refreshed feel more natural.

  • Pair drinks with routines — Have water with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or sip while waiting for the kettle to boil.
  • Make it inviting — Add citrus, herbs, or fruit to water if that makes it more enjoyable.
  • Notice your needs — Keep drinks easy to reach and take breaks for food, water, and fresh air during long stretches of work.
  • Start the day warmly — A breakfast of oats with apples, pears, nuts, or seeds can offer a comforting beginning to a cool morning.
