Nutrition for Every Stage of Womanhood

As a woman, your nutritional needs change throughout your life.

As your body evolves through life stages like puberty, pregnancy (and post-preganancy), and menopause—the way it metabolizes food and what it needs to function also change (source).

Some key stages in women’s health include:

  • Menopause and Perimenopause: Women often experience perimenopausal weight gain, which can be reduced by modest calorie restriction along with adequate protein intake. Other ways to support you would be protecting bone and heart health, managing weight changes, and using nutrition to help ease hot flashes and mood changes.
  • Fertility and Preconception Health: Whether you’re trying to conceive naturally or preparing for treatments, fertility can be enhanced by a diet high in plant-based protein, dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals (source).
  • Prenatal and Postpartum Nutrition: Gain healthy weight and access nutrient-dense during pregnancy and support your nutritional needs while breastfeeding.
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Hormonal fluctuations can significantly impact mood, energy, and cravings. It’s key for you to understand how nutrition can ease PMS symptoms and support stable energy throughout your cycle.
  • Endometriosis: Living with endometriosis often means managing painful periods, digestive issues, and fatigue. The best way to manage your endometriosis is through anti-inflammatory nutrition strategies and gentle approaches to support your overall well-being.
  • Hormonal Acne: Hormonal breakouts can be frustrating and impact confidence. Explore the nutrition-skin connection and develop strategies to support clear, healthy skin from the inside out.

Proper nutrition can be a powerful tool to optimize your health at every stage.

Questions around women's health & nutrition

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is affects 10-13 percent of women globally (source). It can present very differently from person to person. Our BC Dietitians understand that there are actually different types of PCOS, each requiring tailored nutrition approaches. We help you identify which type you might have and develop targeted strategies to manage insulin resistance, support hormone balance, reduce inflammation, and address symptoms like irregular periods, weight concerns, and fatigue through evidence-based nutrition therapy.

Endometriosis often goes undiagnosed for years. While nutrition can’t cure endometriosis, anti-inflammatory eating patterns may help manage symptoms like pelvic pain and digestive issues. Our dietitians work alongside your medical team to provide nutrition strategies that may reduce inflammation and support your overall wellbeing during diagnosis and treatment.

Nutritional needs increase significantly during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support both your health and your baby’s development. Our prenatal nutrition specialists provide clear, evidence-based guidance on key nutrients like iron, calcium, protein, and DHA, along with practical meal planning that accounts for food aversions, morning sickness, and the demands of new parenthood. We also support you through breastfeeding nutrition and the transition to infant feeding.

Irregular periods and hormonal symptoms can significantly impact your quality of life, and nutrition plays an important role in hormone regulation. Our women’s health dietitians help you understand how blood sugar balance, adequate nutrition, and specific nutrients can support menstrual health. We address underlying causes like PCOS, thyroid issues, or nutrient deficiencies while providing practical strategies to stabilize energy and mood throughout your cycle.
